Random Thoughts from a Grumpy Old Man – August 10, 2019

Here are some of my random thoughts (picture eye roll from my kids) on events taking place in the world today with an emphasis on sports.

I was really looking forward to watching the Northern Trust golf this weekend.  The Fed Ex points concept is interesting and all of the best golfers are playing, but is it too much to ask that they play on a challenging course!  Dustin Johnson leading at 12 under after 2 rounds is not exciting, challenging golf…it is a putting contest. The golf courses that host tournaments need to look at the one’s that have challenged the golfers.  Length is not a requirement as you can’t make the golf course long enough with today’s equipment and you limit the number of golfer’s that can win.  What the course does need is water (lots of it), long rough and tight fairways.  Provide quality risk/reward options (e.g. driveable par 4 with some danger), tough pin placements and fast greens that require an approach shot that rests on the correct side of the hole.  A winning score of no more than 12 under.  I am sure I will get a lot of disagreement, but this is what I enjoy.

Who thinks Mitch McConnell (the lipless wonder) was bullied as a child?  I am not a violent, mean person, but whenever I see his face and listen to him deny reality I just want to punch him in the face.  If he loses his re-election bid I will be a happy man!

It has been a while since the NBA draft, but I wanted to make one quick comment about the “experts”.  After 10 straight draft choices being called “steals” I turned it off.  As an expert you should be required to provide real insight and opinions, both positive and negative.  They seem to be “kissing ass” and more worried about not offending anyone.  Additionally, some of their comments cause me to say what….what evidence do you have of this?  For instance Jay Bilas said that Winston Garland is a better shooter than Coby White when Garland’s breadth of work covered 5 college games.  Hilarious!

That’s it for now.  There are so many things that make me grumpy I am sure you will be hearing from me again soon.
